Kansas State Capitol

10th and Jackson
785-296-3966

The Kansas State Capitol is located on a 20-acre tract in downtown Topeka. Its distinctive green copper dome with Ad Astra statue is a prominent feature of the city skyline. Not only is the Kansas State Capitol the seat of our state's government, it is one of the most majestically beautiful buildings you'll tour in the Sunflower State. The Capitol took 37 years to complete and is currently undergoing extensive renovation, but you can already enjoy newly restored rooms and features. During your visit, you'll see:

    - Restored Representative Hall and Senate Chamber
    - Former Supreme Court chamber
    - Governor's ceremonial office
    - John Steuart Curry murals
    - Capitol Store (with Kansas and Capitol treasures)

The Capitol is a beautiful building with rich history. The murals are unbelievable. Definitely take a tour with a tour guide if you can and if the dome to the top is open go all the way up, the view is breathtaking. Limestone rock around the visitor's center is a must see to get the experience of the amazing architecture and carpentry that went into the building. Lots of great information here and stop by the gift shop for lots of great finds. The staff is always very nice and accomodating!

Were in Topeka for the food truck festival and decided to take a visit to the capitol building. The grounds were well taken care of. You can either go with a group for the tour or just take one by yourself. Very beautiful inside and the gift shop was nice

Went for the very first time with my mother in law and three boys aged 7,6 and 2. The visitor center is a little hard to find if you've never been there but they were great about positing signs on where we needed to go. When we got in, the information counter was friendly and helpful and where we needed to be for their tour. We quickly found, however, that it's definitely not a kid friendly tour and made it only 15-20 minutes into the hour long tour. Had my children not been there I would have greatly enjoyed sticking with the tour but unfortunately my kids just weren't old enough the appreciate the history of the capitol. The tour guide, from what we experienced, was very knowledgeable of the capitol, friendly and I could see she was very passionate about the history of the building. I will definitely be back to do the full tour this year!

After a 15-year renovation costing $320 million (100 times the original cost), the Kansas State Capitol Building is an architectural and historical gem. I would highly recommend taking the 296 steps to the top of the Dome...amazing views and interesting perspective. The tour was free and hosted by a kind and informed guide. This building is a treasure!

I took the dome tour, but not the whole building tour. The dome tour was very interesting and beautiful. All but one in our large group made it to the top. I'm not sure whether nerves or fatigue stopped the one.
